What is Dance Movement Therapy?

Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is a therapeutic approach to unlock healing through movement. We do this by bringing awareness to the connection of the mind body and soul. Learning about how our movement informs our thoughts and by tuning into the physical sensory experience the movement brings up, we start to create emotional space which gives us access to making choices instead of going along with the ones that have been made for us.

We regularly rely on nonverbal cues when in relationship with others. We each have our own lexicon of movement patterns that inform our way of relating with others based on a combination of nurture and nature.

These movement patterns start in the womb and exponentially grow after birth. For example, when a new born cries, the caregiver responding to the cry begins the relational dance and nonverbal movement patterns.

Dance movement therapy can start with young infants as movement is their first language. While as a DMT therapist I can work individually with infants and young children, it most likely will include the caregiver. The caregiver can learn about what the infant or young child is trying to nonverbally communicate by tuning into the nonverbal movement of the infant or child and by tuning into their own nonverbal movement patterns.

Bringing consciousness to movement patterns and nonverbal movement has the potential to reveal unconscious thoughts and feelings and have choice in what we do with that information.
